Stolkeren

He watched as she wrapped the scarf more tightly around her neck. He saw her hunch up her shoulders to avoid the harsh wind that swept through the city. As she weaved her way through the crowd she carried him behind her like the tail of a long streamer. He matched her movements perfectly, his eyes never once leaving his prey.

She nodded her head slightly along to the music playing in her head phones. She had not noticed his presence. She felt no need to run.

He watched from across the street as she descended the stairs, into the station. By the time she reached the bottom, he was halfway down, and the gap between them was rapidly shrinking. He knew exactly where she was heading. The trap was set.

'Cities make people blind.' he thought as he took his seat opposite her. 'She should be better than this.'

He studied her, mere inches away, as she opened her rucksack and took out a notebook. Head down, she started writing, her head still bobbing slightly, in time with the tinny noise that leaked through her headphones. He could have almost made out what she was listening to, had he cared.

He watched her chew the end of her pen, lost in thought, as she tucked loose strands of hair behind her ears. He noted her pale skin, the curve where her neck disappeared into the shirt she was wearing. A slow smile spread across his lips.

He waited for the train to pause between stations and when it did he fished out a cigarette from his pocket and held it out to her.

She paused, frowning at the object thrust under her nose. then she looked up.

And screamed!

With a desperate lurch she threw herself across the train towards him.

"Spike!! Oh my god! It's really you! It's really you." she said as arms wide she grabbed him and hugged him tightly. "What the hell are you doing here? I can't believe you're here!" Spike grinned as she hugged him again and planted happy little kisses on his cheeks.

"It was decided you needed some company, pet." he said, as she settled herself in the seat next to him, her arm locked with his. "And I thought it was time I checked out what London's been up to, without me."

"I can't believe it." Cassidy said as she pulled away slightly, to get a better look at him. "Are you on your own?" she asked, still grinning.

"Just me," he replied, "though your folks send their love. As well as other things," he nodded to the bag at his feet. "but that can wait."

Cassidy looked up at him with wide eyes. "You hungry?" she asked, still smiling. he nodded again, towards the bag.

"Your dad made sure I brought my packed lunch." he said raising an eyebrow. "Fancy raising some hell in this town?"

Cass snuggled into his arm, and sighed. "Wasn't planning to," she said, lifting her head, to look up at Spike's pale face. "but partying with you sounds fun!"

Cassidy couldn't help smiling again as she returned to snuggling into Spike's leather-clad shoulder. 'He's here.' she thought. ?He's really here.'
